MAC, in collaboration with City of Tea Tree Gully, proudly presents Café 94! On Thursday, October 16, the very first Café 94 session was held at the Holden Hill Community Centre from 11.30am to 2pm. Cafe 94 is an activity based, multicultural social support programme, aimed at active older people from CALD backgrounds.
Council and MAC staff and volunteers have spent several months planning for this exciting new programme for older CALD people living within the City of Tea Tree Gully area. Thursday’s session featured morning tea which included fresh fruit as well as sweet treats from Switzerland. Participants chose from a variety of activities including Montessori based activities such as glass decorating; cultural artefact exploration and spring flowers craft.
The highlight of the session was no doubt the Bollywood style Indian dance performance and interactive workshop. Mudra, our Indian performer, explained the cultural significance of just some of the key movements she incorporated into her routine.
Participants expressed their delight and appreciation of the wonderful colours and textures on display around the room. With the session having an Indian cultural theme, older people were able to touch and feel items such as the beautiful Saris, Bindis and other costume jewellery worn by Mudra, council and MAC staff and volunteers. For many, this was the first time they had the opportunity to explore these treasures up close. Lunch, of course, was an Indian dish!
Mac would like to thank the City of Tea Tree Gully for so warmly embracing MAC’s Café 94 model and especially the participants who joined us on this special occasion. We hope to see you all again in November!
